Native to South Africa and one of the most well known and spectacular of all the tropical flowers and its cousin to the banana. This tropical plant is famous due to its beautiful orange and purple flowers which birds love. Bird of paradise typically flowers in the late winter or early spring, but under optimal conditions, it flowers at other times.
This plant loves warm temperatures and a lot of sunshine. It needs well drained soil. They grow 3.5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. They like full sun to part shade areas.
There are five Strelitzia species, but only two are commonly grown as indoor plants: Strelitzia reginae (the orange bird of paradise) and Strelitzia nicolai (the white bird of paradise).
